Hugo

Hugo

One of my favourite travel discoveries was the Hugo cocktail. I first tried it while holidaying in Croatia, and it quickly became my go-to daytime drink. Light, refreshing, and not overly sweet, it was the perfect way to cool down on a warm afternoon while taking in the stunning coastal views.

The Hugo is a beautifully simple cocktail made with prosecco, elderflower, fresh mint, and a splash of soda water. Traditionally, it's made with elderflower liqueur, but at home I often use elderflower cordial instead. It gives the same delicate floral flavour without adding extra alcohol, making it the perfect light daytime drink.

Whether you're entertaining friends, relaxing by the pool, or dreaming of European holidays, this easy cocktail is guaranteed to transport you straight to the Adriatic coast.

What You'll Need

  • 30ml elderflower cordial for a lighter, less alcoholic version, or 30ml St-Germain elderflower liqueur if you'd like a little extra kick
  • Juice of ½ lime
  • A splash of soda water
  • Chilled prosecco, to top up
  • Plenty of ice
  • A handful of fresh mint leaves
  • Lime wedge or wheel, to garnish

Method

  1. Fill a large wine glass with plenty of ice and add a handful of torn mint leaves.
  2. Add the elderflower cordial (or St-Germain) and squeeze in the fresh lime juice.
  3. Pour in a splash of soda water and top up with chilled prosecco.
  4. Give it a gentle stir and garnish with a wedge or wheel of lime.
  5. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your own little taste of Croatia.

Tip: If you can find St-Germain, it creates a more authentic European-style Hugo. If not, elderflower cordial works beautifully and keeps the drink lighter and more refreshing for a sunny afternoon.
